Park Ranger

I shared this analogy with a client recently during a breakthrough session, and he suggested I share this with you. I chose this analogy because he has always wanted to be a Park Ranger in a National Forest.

On the power of cultivating the mind

Your mind is wild terrain and you are the Park Ranger in charge of it all.

Most of your mind is uncharted territory.

Many of the trails are ancient, established long before the thought of you, laid by environment, ancestors, and parents.

A few paths were unknowingly created by YOU trying new things and going new ways.

You’re responsible for a vast and complex system, and you live, mostly unconsciously, traveling the same primary trails, repeating the same patterns, habits, checkpoints, and routines.

In reality, you could spend a lifetime reinforcing the paths that have already been created, never venturing into new areas, but these familiar ways keep you in loops and patterns that are part of your default network.

In the wild, they look like ditches, holloways, and swamps… places that keep you stuck.

STUCKNESS

Stuckness is a signal that you’ve gotten to an end point on your path.

It shows you’ve settled into something that no longer opens the way for you.

Impulses (chemical and electrical) create discomfort in an effort to spark you to do something different.

Basically, stuckness begs you to create a new path!

It’s an indication that it’s time to make a new way forward, not to wait for one.

The impulse wants to push you past your comfort level, to find shortcuts between two paths, and to save time and energy.

It’s your spirit encouraging you to elevate your experience, gain efficiency, and live better.

It’s YOU wanting to make a way for more joy, awe, and pleasure.

UNEARTHING SOMETHING NEW

Cultivating the mind takes time, awareness, and intention.

Forging new mental pathways is the work of moving through your uncharted terrain to unearth something new.

You may find an obstacle or challenge, an unexpected visitor, or a pleasant surprise, but you will surely find treasures you never would’ve seen until you started blazing new paths.

As you cultivate your mind, the whole system will run more efficiently, more enjoyably, and more comfortably - not just in your mind, but in your physical body.

Forging ideal pathways for yourself improves the chemical and electrical signaling that’s happening within your nervous system at all times.

Your nervous system is your operating system, and if you are running the proper programs, you can override dead-end paths and make new connections that work better for you.

How terrible to have a mind that works against you!

Thankfully, the mind is malleable.

Be intentional about which paths you clear and how you clear them.

And be intentional about which pathways you allow to close and grow over.

You are responsible for the jungle that is your mind, and you have to live in it.

Make it beautiful.

Make it work well for you!

A good Park Ranger would not begin cultivating a trail system by randomly chopping down trees on a whim with a butter knife.

That would be exhausting and fruitless.

Instead, they would develop a clear plan with the correct tools taking into consideration the entire ecosystem.

They would analyze every aspect to optimize natural harmony.

The mind deserves to be cultivated in similar fashion, which also translates to more harmony within the physical body.

NEUROBIOLGY

In neurobiology, you’ll learn that these paths are called neural or neuronal pathways, and they are the channels through which you navigate and experience this reality.

Electrical and chemical signals travel down these pathways interconnecting a vast system - your nervous system.

You are the wild terrain.

Cultivate your experience by sending better signals.

Tame the jungle, Park Ranger, and let me know if I can help!
